נכתב ע"י Oded and Shiri , דצמבר 30, 2011 The sons of Yaakov Avinu must have been very powerful and thoughtful people, with each one uniquely great in his traits and gifts. Yet, when there was a momentous opportunity to bring peace and joy to their illustrious father, they all decided that the best person for this moment was the daughter of Asher, Serach! What did the sons of Yaakov see in her that made them choose her?
By combining the midrashim presented by Rabbi Simcha Weinberg, it appears to me that Serach's gift was her ability to connect the different levels of our existence (our higher and lower soul). Her gift was integration. With Yaakov her singing is directed at his "emotional" unease (Ruach level). The disappearence of Yosef and the break in the vision of the family sent Yaakov Avinu into a fragmented reality, which manifested in him not having a sense of shalom (completeness). Serach was able to see that what was needed was not intellectual proof, but emotional pacifity so that the message that Yosef is alive will enter him smoothly and heal what was fragmented. This fixing is what I believe is the essense of Yaakov saying the Shema when he reunites with Yosef. The family and the man that was fragmented was now complete and "one", just as the Shema deals with the oneness of God. The Midrash that deals with Serach bat Asher as the 70th member of the family entering Mitzrayim is completing the physical representation (Nefesh) of the Jewish nation. The Midrash of the wise woman is dealing with the intellectual (Neshama) wisdom of one that has clarity and thereby the ability to guide. The Midrash of entering Gan Eden while still alive means being connected to eternality while also being in this world (Chaya). Someone that is able to connect on all levels and interact in the specific way that each one demands, is someone that is worthy of representing a mother in Israel. Shabbat Shalom report abuse
