R'Shlomo told the following story: Once a Holy Hippy'le was sitting at a Rebbe's tisch (table=gathering) on Friday night and the Rebbe was talking about the Mohn. The Hippy'le
was going "Wow! Wow! Wow!" without stop, because he was soooo blown away with the concept of the Mohn and the Rebbe's teachings.
He was really excited. Finally, the Chassidim couldn't take it anymore and they started yelling at him to leave because he was really making quite a disturbance. The Rebbe turned to his chassidim and said "Leave him alone!! What do you care if there's ONE person here who understands what I'm talking about?".
It's a curious thing about the Mohn. When the Torah explicitly tells us of some word coinage, there's a direct link.Odom comes from Odomah; Isha come from Ish; names of Ya'akov's sons etc. Why is it called 'Mohn'? Sh'mot 16;15 "Bnei Yisroel saw it and they said one to the other 'Mohn hu ci lo yad'u mah hu' -it's mohn since they did not know what it is- Moshe told them this is the bread G-d has given you to eat." Why not call it "Mah'?
MohN is numerically 90 = twice MaH ( 2 X 45). What is the significance here? Earlier in the chapter (16;1-3) It's 30 days since the Exodus and the matzah has run out. The people complain to Moshe and Aharon - Better that we should have found our death at G-d's hand while we had food aplenty rather than your (?!) taking us out to this desert where we will all starve to death.(16;4-5)G-d then tells Moshe of the Heavenly bread he will shower upon Israel, to be gathered each day's food on a daily basis as a test to the people. However, on the sixth day of the week there will be a double portion.
In the following verses (16;6-9) Moshe and Aharon tell Bnei Yisroel the following:a.This evening you will know that G-d took you out of Mitzrayim-RaSh"I emphasizes G-d took you out and NOT we (Moshe and Aharon.) b.In the morning you will see G-d's glory as He has heard your complaints upon Him "v'Nakhnu MaH ci taleenu aleinu"and what are we [we (Aharon and me) are insignificant] that you should complain against us.c.Moshe reiterates when G-d gives you meat in the evening and bread in the morning to satisfy you as G-d hears your complaints that you complain upon Him ,"v'Nakhnu MaH, lo aleinu t'loonoateichem, ci ahl HaShem" and what are we (Aharon and me), your complaints are not upon us but upon G-d.d.Moshe tells Aharon speak to all of Israel 'Come closer before G-d for He has heard your complaints'. The continuation is the actualization of G-d's promise to provide food for Bnei Yisroel.
Moshe and Aharon were trying to educate the people that IT'S NOT ABOUT THEM. The physical sustenance was secondary if Bnei Yisroel would just focus upon the fact that it is G-d who has taken them out of Egypt. Surely, the all-powerful G-d who has taken them out of Mitzrayim and through the Sea, will continue to sustain you on a physical level after having saved you from the enslavement of Mitzrayim!! If they can just internalize the message of "v'Nakhnu MaH", then "kirvu lifnei HaShem".Once you understand that you are insignificant before G-d , then you can come closer to G-d.
Unfortunately, Bnei Yisroel were not yet at that level. That explains their calling it MohN ' ci lo yad'u MaH hu' since they had not yet understood the repeated message of the "v'Nakhnu MaH".
Fortunately, another layer of the message was given over to Bnei Yisroel, the message of the Lekhem Mishneh. During the week man is expected to do some action related to his livelihood, even if all that entails is gathering the heavenly mohn descended from the skies. Essentially that means a person could feel he is part of the picture. For Shabbat, one is being asked to recede totally from the picture,as G-d has provided doubly on the sixth day and no action is allowed for man on the Shabbat.(The Lekhem, bread is Mishneh, secondary) This is the time to reach out and grow spiritually, coming closer to G-d. v'Nakhnu MaH can also be read (without vowels)-v'Nakhnu= we have rested,(pause) mei-H'=from G-d ====> we have surrendered ourselves to the realization that All is from G-d.(not surprising as this happens during the week of Hod in S'firat Ha'Omer).
Apparently the lesson was learned very well since just 2 weeks after the first Shabbat of the Lekhem Mishneh, Bnei Yisroel received the Torah.
ChaZ"L tell us " Lo nitnah HaTorah ella l'och'lei HaMohn"- Once Bnei Yisroel internalized the message of the mohn, that it's not about them, but about G-d- then, and only then could they receive the Torah. In fact, perhaps they learned that lesson too well.Everybody knows, on the morn of Matan Torah, Moshe Rabbeinu had to stir Bnei Yisroel to come to the mountain. The Alexsandr Rebbe explained that each family in Bnei Yisroel felt they weren't worthy to receive the Torah -surely G-d can't be talking to me! Moshe had to reassure each family that , YES, they were worthy, and Please show up!!
I had the privilege, for three summers, to work at Camp HASC (Hebrew Academy for Special Children). One of the campers there, an autistic client named Scott had 2 very special talents; 1. Although he never wore a watch, he had an inner clock that enabled him to tell you the accurate time at any given moment. 2.For whatever reason, he knew the TV Guide inside and out going back years and years, what program was playing on which channel on Day X Time Y. This was borne out empirically. We procured a very old copy of TV Guide and tested him. He just knew it all. However, the best answer he gave was when we gave him a specific date (without the day of the week) and time -"Nothing is on.That day was Shabbos".
