 The truth is that when the Sanctuary was destroyed and the Temple was burnt and the people driven into exile, the Divine Presence left her home in order to accompany them into captivity. Before leaving, however,
she took one last look at her House and the Holy of Holies, and the places where the Kohanim and the Levites used to perform their worship.
When she entered the land of exile she observed how the people were oppressed and trodden underfoot by the nations, and she exclaimed, “Who gave Jacob for a spoil (Isaiah 42:24)?” The people replied, “He against Whom we have sinned.” The Divine Presence echoed back, “And in Whose ways they would not walk.”
In the days to come, when the Holy One, Blessed is He, will remember His people, the Community of Israel, the Divine Presence will return from exile first and proceed to her House, as the Holy Temple will be built first.
The Holy One, Blessed is He, will then say to the Community of Israel, “Shake yourself from the dust, arise and sit down, Jerusalem (Isaiah 52:2; Quoted in Lecha Dodi of Kabbalat Shabbat).” She will inquire, “Where shall I go, since my Houses destroyed, Mike Temple is burnt with fire?”
The Holy One, Blessed is He, will then rebuild the Temple, restore the Holy of Police, build the city of Jerusalem and then raised her from the dust. So the verse says, “God does build up Jerusalem,” first, and then, “He gathers together the dispersed of Israel,” and afterwords, “Who heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds (Psalms 147:2–3),” this being an allusion to the resurrection of the dead. Then will be fulfilled that which is written, “And I will put My spirit within you, and cause you to walk in My statutes (Ezekiel 36:27).” [Zohar I, 134a]
