Rabbi Chaim of Tzanz passed by a synagogue and heard the voice of a student reciting passages from a volume of Jewish law. He was captivated by the student's earnestness, until, after a long while, his son prevailed
upon him to leave.
The Tzanzer remarked, “I was so attracted by a voice reciting Torah for its own sake that I was unable to move from the spot. Had I received an invitation to enter Paradise, I would not have budged a single step!” (Pe'eir Yitzchak, page 14) “Listen to our voices, God, our Lord,” opens the 16th blessing of the Amidah. We can only pray for God to hear all our voices if we honor the voices of prayer and Torah study we hear from others as did the Tzanzer in the above story. This is especially important during the Three Weeks when we mourn the Temple that was destroyed because of hatred. |
