“A man went from the house of Levi and he took a daughter of Levi.” We are taught that she was far older than he. It is definitely not the usual way for a man to marry a woman so much older than he. He did this only because
she came from the house of Levi, who conducted themselves with tremendous piety, and therefore merited to see secrets hidden from the eyes of the rest of the generation. This is why the verse says that, “he went,” meaning, he went away from the normal pattern of behavior to marry a woman younger or the same age as he, because he had such great appreciation for the piety of Levi, and the clarity that developed from that piety. (Haamak Davar)
When we pray for the righteous in the Amidah, we are not only praying that God should give us the merit of having such people in our generation, and protecting them, but to empower us to live with the level of righteousness and piety necessary to have the same level of clarity as did the House of Levi.
