What is the Reason: Pride in My Tzeddaka |
I recently sponsored one of your weekly emails and you urged me to do so anonymously. We were in a rush and I didn’t have an opportunity to ask you why?
The Remah (Y”D, 249:13) writes: “A person should not take any pride in the charity that he gives. If he does; not only will he not receive a reward, he will actually be punished for it. However, one who dedicates a physical item to a synagogue is permitted to have his name inscribed on the item, and it is appropriate to do so.”
I never suspected that you would take pride in your gift; but I was certain that you would ask offering me an opportunity to quote the above!
