From Enoch to the Yam Suf: “Az Yashir Moshe”, “Then Moshe and the Children of Israel chose to sing this song.” Rabbi Yehuda ben Pazi taught: Why did the Children of Israel
choose to begin their song with “Az”? They knew that originally this land had been dry. However, when the generation of Enoch began to sin, which is described with the word “Az”: “Then to call in the Name of God became profaned,” (Genesis 4:26) God responded by turning their land into sea. As it says: “Who summons the waters of the sea and pours them upon the face of the earth.” (Amos 5:8) Now God had changed the sea back into land, so the people said, “Let us praise Him with the word “Az”, which expresses Bitachon – Feeling Secure with God, as in, “Az – Then – you will walk on your way securely.” (Proverbs 3:23) (Shemot Rabbah 23:4) Rabbi Yehuda understood the Song of the Sea as a Tikkun – Fixing – of the very early sin of Enoch – Idol Worship. People felt unworthy of dealing directly with God and began to call on the Sun and other “powerful” forces as intermediaries. Why does Rabbi Yehuda describe this Tikkun as Bitachon? What can it teach us about become Botchim – People who feel secure with God?
