Introduction Print E-mail

RamchalThis book is an excellent opportunity to transform your spiritual life and give it direction. Ironically, the best way to begin studying Derech Hashem, The Way of God, is to forget everything you know about Jewish Philosophy. This book will place each step in the development of Jewish Thought in its proper order. This book provides a structure that never existed before. Everything will be placed in its proper place in the structure and in its proper context. This book is structured and direct.

We will all have many questions because we are “familiar” with many concepts of Jewish Thought. However, those ideas are disorganized. Even if our impressions are accurate, we usually do not understand how those concepts fit into the overall structure of Jewish thought. The Way of God will provide an outline. We will be able to see where everything we “know” about Judaism fits into the outline. We can assume that something that is inconsistent with the outline is probably not true.

Try to summarize each paragraph before proceeding to the next. It is also essential to constantly review the development of the ideas and to consider how one flows from the other and how it relates to the other concepts.

The Ramchal wrote two major non-kabalistic books. One is Derech Hashem, the Way of God; the other is Mesilat Yesharim, the Path of the Just. The Path of the Just guides a person to develop him or herself to achieve the level of prophecy. The Way of God was intended to guide self-development. This book teaches us how Judaism understands the way of God. It is not telling us what human beings are supposed to do, but of course the more we understand about G-d, the better we can understand what it is that we are supposed to do, or, more accurately, it teaches us what we are supposed to accomplish through our mitzvoth.
