Parsha Mitzvot: Shemini: Mitzvah 165 - Concept 185 Print E-mail

Mitzvos“For I am God, your Lord, you shall sanctify yourselves and you will be holy, for I am holy; and you shall not contaminate yourselves through any teeming thing that creeps on the earth (Vayikra 11:44).” We may not eat non-kosher maggots (Rambam, Hilchot Ma’achalot Assurot - The Laws of Forbidden Foods).

Maggots are associated with waste, garbage and death. A person who strives to achieve sanctity must live with dignity, and not approach that which is lowly and disgusting. (Ridbaz)
