“If a person will sin and will commit one of all the commandments of God that may not be done, but is unaware and became guilty, and bears his iniquity. He shall bring an unblemished

ram from the flock of the proper value for a guilt offering to the Kohen, and the Kohen shall provide atonement for the inadvertence that he committed unwillingly and it shall be forgiven him. It is a guilt-offering; he has become guilty before God.” (Leviticus 5:17-19) A person shall bring an Asham Talui when uncertain of guilt. (Rambam, Hilchot Shegagot – The Laws of Offerings for Unintentional Transgressions)

“And bears his iniquity,” Rabbi Yose Hagelili said, “If one who does not know whether he has sinned is punished, surely there will be punishment fo one who knows he has sinned.”
