Pondering the Passuk: What Happened To The Light? |

On the 25th day of Elul, 5770 years ago, “And G-d said, ‘let there be light.’ And there was light.” (Genesis 1:3) This past Monday was the 25th day of Elul. And I remembered that the world was created on this day
5770 years ago. Happy 5770th Birthday, World! It was the day of the first light.
That got me thinking for a change. The number 25, as in the 25th day of Elul, is associated with the light of creation, the Or HaGanuz, the hidden light of creation, that Hashem put a way in his storehouse for the use of Tzadikim (the righteous) in Olam HaBah (the Work to Come). 25 also represents the light of Chanukah, the light of Nissim (of Miracles).
And then I understood the question in a whole new light. The question that Hashem asked Adam after Adam ate from the Tree of knowledge. G-d said to Adam, Ayekah – where are you holding (Genesis 3:9).
The word, Ayekah, is spelled Aleph, Yud, Chof, Hay. The numerical value of those letters is 1, 10, 20 and 5, total 36. If we split the word Ayekah in two, we get Ayei Koh – Aleph, Yud and Chof (or Kof), Hay. The numerical value of the Chof (or Kof) and the Hay are 20 + 5 or 25, the same as the 25th day of Elul.
So after Adam ate from the Tree of knowledge, Hashem said to him, “Ayekah? Ahyay Kof-Hay -- Where is Kof-Hay?
When G-d said to Adam “Ayekah”, He was actually asking him the following question: Ayei Koh – Where is the light I entrusted you with, the light of 25? What did you do to my Briyah, to my Creation?!
I imagine that Adam didn’t realize the value of that commandment, the value of what he was entrusted with. And his actions changed the whole world.
Could it be our nature to do the same? Are there treasures that G-d has entrusted us with, the value of which we are not aware?
Is it possible that each of us is an important part of the Briyah?
Wouldn’t that mean that what we do counts, and therefore by extension, so do we? Wouldn’t that also mean that G-d cares about what each and every one of us, about what we do and how we pray?
If you really knew in your heart of hearts, that you and your words and actions could change the whole Briyah, just like Adam’s did, what would you change?
Would you daven differently? Would you listen to the shofar differently?
I bless all of us that we each have the ability, the intention and the power to make the changes that bring back Chof-Hay, the light of Creation.
And may we use that light to truly be a light unto the nations.
