Yom HaCippurim Ci-Purim - The Oneness of Purim Print E-mail
Written by Rav Moshe Stepansky

PurimChaZL tell us that as high as Yom Kippur is, it is not quite as high as Purim. What's happening on Yom Kippur? I'm prostrating myself before G-d saying "Master of the World, please please forgive me - I just wasn't thinking and I made all those mistakes".

The G'mara says "Khayav inish li'v'sumei b'Furaya ahd'lo yada bein Baruch Mordechai v'Arrur Haman"On Purim, I'm NOT thinking, I don't differentiate between Baruch Mordechai and Arrur Haman. The general explanation of li'v'sumei is to imbibe wine and become intoxicated. On a deeper level, the Zohar explains it to mean Hamtakat HaDeenim-sweetening the judgments.

On Yom Kippur, R' Shlomo says each one of us can tell G-d - I don't want You to inscribe me in the Book of Life unless you also inscribe my fellow.

However, this insinuates that I am judging my fellow as a sinner and that G-d should inscribe them in the Book of Life on my coattails!!

On Purim, I sweeten the judgments by not even seeing anything wrong with my fellow - ahd'lo yada !!

R'Shlomo explains the difference between a non-Jewish drunkard and a Jewish drunkard: The non-Jewish person, when drunk, will see a thousand people in his blurred vision-even if it's only one person. The Jewish person, when drunk, even if he is looking at a thousand people ==> it's all ONE.

Yom Kippur reflects T'shuva mi'Yir'ah - Returning to G-d out of Awe, and so the Torah we received then also out of Awe - we, Ahm Yisrael, incorporated it only so far. When one does something out of awe and/or fear, there is a certain implicit separation.

Purim reflects T'shuva mi'Ahavah - Returning to G-d out of Love. When one does something out of love, there is a certain implicit Oneness.

"Keey'mu v'Kiblu -keey'mu mah she'kiblu c'var"-M'gillat Esther tells us the yidn ratified and re-accepted the Torah received at Sinai. The word v'Kiblu ,re-accepted is actually written v'Kibl ==> in the singular form, as ONE.

Ahm Yisrael re-accepted the Torah in its Oral form- Torah she'b'al Peh- mi'Ahavah, on Purim..

So, Kudsha B'rich Hu, Oraiy'ta v'Yisrael khad heim =>G-d ,the Holy Torah and Ahm Yisrael are all ONE.

And it is this 'Not knowing' that is the highest level of Knowledge.
