From the Rebbe's Tish: Pesach Synergy Print E-mail
Written by Rabbi Shmuel Brazil

PesachWe say in the dayeinu of the Haggadah אילו קרבנו לפני הר סיני ולא נתן לנו את התורה דיינו. This is a very perplexing statement. If Hashem would have brought us near in front of Har Sinai and not have given us the Torah it would have sufficed? The sole purpose of yetzias Mitzrayim was to receive the Torah as Hashem instructed Moshe תעבדון את האלקים על ההר הזה. If so how could we say it would have been enough?

One of the great Chassidic Masters answered that when Am Yisrael encamped opposite the mountain they attained a level of unity unsurpassed by any other nation previously and for that matter in the future as well. The passuk says ויחן ישראל נגד ההר they encamped utilizing the singular language upon which Rashi comments כאיש אחד בלב אחד like one person with one heart. This was an incredible phenomenon that millions of people jelled together as one with one desire void of jealousy and pettiness towards one another. Attainment of this attribute alone would have been sufficient even without receiving the Torah.

One might attempt to refute this concept by saying that we find the same form of language and attribuet even by Mitzrayim as it says מצרים נסע [בשלח יד י] in the singular form on which Rashi comments בלב אחד כאיש אחד which demonstrates that they had unity as well even though it was for an evil purpose. However, if we examine the language of Rashi with a little closer, we will discover a vast difference between the two instances. By Har Sinai it describes the matzav like one man and one heart while by Mitzrayim it states the reverse with one heart and one man. Here lies the more than light years separation between the Yid and the goy. All Yidden are essentially one existence who are likened to one person, so consequently as one person they desire the same. The goyim on the other hand are intrinsically selfish and separated from each other. When the opportunity for gains and profits arises their egotistical desires encourage them to join together as allies even with their enemies and together give off the appearance as if they are a one man unit. However at the end when the booty and treasures lie dancing in front of their eyes, their cravings and appetites overwhelm their pseudo loyalty and they are known to stab their partners in the back.

This is the interpretation of standing at Har Sinai without ever receiving the Torah for by that event we gained the most incredible achdus that was possible – dayeinu! But then again, it is just unthinkable of Am Yisrael without a Torah? This too is answerable in light of this incredible achdus through which we would have been zoche to perceive the Torah without it being given at all. For every Yid represents another letter in the Torah. If we combine all the letters we have the entire Torah. If we really penetrated the innerness of every Yid we would bring out his letter that lies within. Coming to Har Sinai would have been enough to receive the Torah through achdus and it would not have been necessary for Hashem to give it to us - dayeinu.

Why did Sinai create and serve as a catalyst for such a achdus amongst Klall Yisrael? From Sinai we learn humility. This mountain was chose upon which the Torah was given for it was humble and did not uproot itself from its place in order to run so that it would be first to reach the place where the Torah was to be given so it could be given on it. This display of humility and nullification merited it to be the one that the Torah was given upon. The first mishna in Pirkei Avos says משה קבל תורה מסיני Moshe received the Torah through his humility like Sinai. In fact it was this mountain itself which taught him humility. For Hashem appeared to Moshe in a burning bush called סנה which the mountain of Sinai was named after. The סנה is a low bush symbolizing humility like the mountain itself. Moshe showed his humility by not looking at the vision of the burning bush feeling that he was not worthy of such a heavenly sight. It was because of his humility that Moshe was chosen to hear the mission of taking Yidden out of Mitzrayim and receiving the Torah on this very mountain. If everyone possessed humility then automatically there would exist achdus. Hashem tells Moshe to remove his shoes for he is standing on holy land. The holy land is Sinai which symbolizes achdus and humility. It is holy for it brings to all holiness. So too, when the Yidden came to Sinai they too were imbued with the humility energy of Har Sinai and they attained the incredible achievement of achdus of איש אחד

Yidden have the highest level of synergy in existence. Synergy is achieved when two or more people work together to create a better solution than either could alone. It’s not your way or my way but a better way - a higher way. Synergy is in nature. The great sequoia trees which grow to heights of 300 feet or more grow in clumps and share a vast array of intermingled roots. Without each other they would blow over in a storm.

Another example is a flock of geese heading south for the winter flying along in a V formation. By flying in formation the whole flock can fly 71 percent farther than if each bird flew alone. When a goose flaps its wings it creates an updraft for the goose that follows. As the lead goose gets tired he will rotate to the back of the V and allow another goose to take the lead position. The geese in the back honk to encourage those in the front. Whenever a goose falls out of formation it immediately feels the resistance of trying to fly alone and quickly gets back into formation. Finally when one of the geese gets sick or is wounded and falls out of formation, two geese will follow it down to help and protect it. They will stay with the injured goose until it is better or dies and then will join a new formation or create their own to catch up with the group.

These are just two examples of synergy that Hashem put into nature to teach Man that the tachlis is to come to achdus. Nature accomplishes this naturally. Man must use his bechirah to overcome his selfish tendencies and attain the middah of humility in order to accomplish the incredible task that Hashem has given to each individual. In the lesson of the geese there is so much of Klall Yisrael there that it is astonishing. It is Sinai that has given us this koach of synergy. As the gemarrah [Shabbos 146] says that Yisrael who stood by Har Sinai merited that their putrid blemish of Man’s original sin was erased. It is there where we became one with G-d one with Am Yisrael and one with ourselves. Hence, the root of the word synergy stems from Sinai, Sinai energy the highest form of achdus that exists. Every other form is a far watered down and a mere pseudo duplication of ours.

אילו קרבנו לפני הר סיני ולא נתן לנו את התורה דיינו!
