 The problem of the apostate Jew comes up on the Responsa of Rav Duran. Supposing a father left the Jewish fold and then had a son who was brought up as a Gentile. If this son dies,
is his Jewish brother obliged to mourn for him as he would be obliged to do for his Jewish brother? Duran replies that is the brother died while he was a child, there is to be mourning for him, since it was in no way his fault that he had not been introduced to Judaism. Burt if the brother died when he had grown to manhood, there is to be no mourning for hum. However, he remarks, Maimonides rules otherwise. According to Maimonides no blame is to be attached t the son of an apostate, because his parents brought hum up as a Gentile so that, according to this opinion, there would have to be mourning, even if the brother died after he had grown to manhood.
