The Ten Commandments embody the entire Torah, as taught by Rav Saadiah Gaon1. Furthermore, just as the entire Torah is embodied in the Ten Commandments, it is embodied
in its every single letter2. But one can only realize this if the source of the soul of the teacher from whom one is learning is from the World of Unification. If, however, the teacher’s soul is from the World of Separate, then the student learning from him also can only receive separate teachings.3 This, then, is what it means, “David learned only two things from Achitophel” – the two things were separate teachings. 1 This is found in Saadiah Gaon’s Sefer HaMitzvoth, but the idea is already found in the Midrash (Numbers Rabbah 13:16), in the Bahir #124. The Ramban (Nachmanides) has an entire work that lists how every single commandment is embodied within one of the Ten Commandments (Kitvei HaRamban II p. 521ff. 2 The idea is that the entire Torah is one single, indivisible unit, the expression of the One, Infinite God. Hence, the Torah is like a hologram, where the entire whole can be seen in any “part.” 3 If the teacher is connected to God, if he is “one” with God, then he will realize that oneness and be able to transmit it. Otherwise, he cannot transmit what he himself does not see. Translation and Commentary by Rabbi Yehoshua Starrett and reprinted with the kind permission of the Baal Shem Tov Foundation.
