Samuel is "girded in a linen Ephod" (v. 18). The verse reads literally as "a boy girded in a linen Ephod". The donning of this special garment designates Samuel's graduation to a new rank in the priestly hierarchy and marks
a turning point his priestly career. This graduation is further alluded to in the Narrative which now mentions him by his first name. No longer is he a nameless and ordinary child but a child of substance deserving of a name. But Samuel’s growth has not reached its summit just yet. The Narrative may refer to Samuel by his name but it still applies the term ‘boy' to him. Samuel continues to be called by both appellations until chapter three where he experiences divine communication (ch. 3). |
