The 28th of Shevat is the Yahrtzeit of Rav Ephraim Ezra Laniado, author of Degel Machaneh Ephraim. When God created His world, it did not have the power to endure. Everything would have reverted to its Root in Nothingness. In order that the world should be able to endure, God created Israel.

The very name Israel –Yud, Shin, Resh, Aleph, Lamed – alludes to this:

The letter Resh is Wisdom, Lamed is Understanding, and Aleph os Knowledge. These are the first Emanations of creation.

The two remaining letters, Yud and Shin, spell out Yesh, which means existence. This alludes to the existence and sustenance of the universe, “Yesh mei Ayin.”
