Nezer Hakodesh: The Study of Midrash |
|
|
The 24th of Shevat is the Yahrtzeit of Rav Avraham Yechiel of Halberstadt, author of Nezer Hakodesh (1730) From The Introduction to the Nezer Hakodesh, Commentary on Bereishit
Rabbah: I have dedicated my life to the principle of the Rambam: There are three categories of people who study Midrash. The first group is that of the simple people who take all the words of the Midrash literally and believe the stories. They basically treat the words of the Sages as stories without meaning. The second group is made up of people who treat the Sages as simple minded fools and ridicule the words of the Midrash.
The third group is that of people who understand that there are deep and sophisticated messages and life lessons in every Midrash, and that the stories are not to be taken literally.
I have worked and struggled to discover the deep and hidden messages in these words and to share them with all those thirsty to drink the great wisdom of the Sages.
