| The Alter Rebbe: Prayer II |
It is somewhat difficult to understand how prayer can be elevated so high. Does prayer not pertain to a physical, mortal human being? It is for this purpose that angels are appointed in each
chamber on High. They receive each parayer and elevate it from one level to the next. The Zohar states that an angel takes each prayers, hugs it and kisses it, and then elevates it to the next higher universe. This process continues until it reaches the highest level. When an angel “kisses” the prayer, he brings his innermost breath and spirit into that prayer. Through this, it is divested of the letters emanating from physical human speech, and it becomes an aspect of angelic speech, which is like pure thought in physical man. The letters of prayer contain its intent and meaning, and with this kiss, they become included in the spirit of the angel. The prayer then pertains to the perception and speech of the angel. When the angel hugs the prayer, he transmits Enveloping Light to it, from his own envelopment. It is in this manner that prayer ascends, level by level, to the very highest state.
